Garden Survival and Success

Potato Pots

(Part I)

Growing potatoes in pots has loads of advantages. You don't have to dig or worry about soil-borne pests and harvesting is easy. You can grow potatoes in pots even if you don't have much of a garden which involves a two-part system. Plant a few potatoes seeds in an inner pot and in approximately eight weeks you can begin harvesting your own home grown potatoes!

How to plant in containers
Step1: Prepare your soil mix. I prefer to use a half and half mix of potting soil and farmyard manure. Good garden centers will stock pre-packed farmyard manure. Alternatively use an organic potting soil mix.

Garden Survival and Success

Do you know how to enrich your soil naturally?

If you love gardening, then fostering your plants is yet another important thing in your life. Avoid using expensive chemical fertilizers which are sold in the market. Making your own natural organic fertilizer is both easy, cheap and often the components can be found in and around the home.

Three effortless ways you can make any type of soil enrich with nutrients naturally:

1. Banana Skins

Adding banana skin is another excellent way to improve your garden soil. They can also be added directly to the ground as long as they are cut up into very small pieces. This creates plenty of new organic matter resulting in a light, well-drained soil which is full of lovely earth worms, Once the banana skin have broken down the will add a powerful cocktail of nutrients. Sulphur, phosphates, potassium and sodium, all of which help plants to grow well and develop their fruits.

2. Leaves (dry)

The leaves of most trees contain twice the minerals content of manure. This is because they're a form of organic roughage, they can dramatically improve and aeration of the soil. It also provides the perfect nutrition beneficial microbes. In short, they make the soil come alive.

3. Raw Egg

When you are preparing your pots with soil, simply include a single raw egg at the bottom. The egg will decompose and act as a natural fertilizer for the seedlings.

Garden Survival and Success

What are the survival factors for your crops?

The techniques related to planting will differ for each crop, and whether the crop is sown directly into the garden or started indoors and transplanted to the garden. Planting depth, spacing and all requirements for temperature, soil, sun, water and nutrients are all basic factors for the survival and success of the crop. Most crops will have some margin for error, but too many stress factors can lead to crop failure. The best way to minimize problems here is to start small. Get comfortable with a few crops at first, and then expand as you learn more.
